Let's cut the bull's head

Dear Dashamir and all!

In Italian we have the expression "tagliare la testa al toro" meaning
something like "go straight for a solution", "not lose time with
inessential details" etc.

The EU provides facilities for a direct contact. Therefore I just
entered the page Write to us | Shaping Europe’s digital future and
wrote the message below. The receipt is time-stamped Tue, 15 Aug 2023
18:16:00 +0000 (UTC) (2023-08-15 20:16)

They promise to reply withing three days. Let's see. The countdown
begins. Shall keep everybody here posted.

Gianguido

Referring to the document "SWD(2021) 124 final" about European Digital
Identity. At page 43 is written "To ensure availability for all
citizens, a desktop version of the Wallet App will also be developed."
Can you please tell me if for this desktop app a Linux version will be
available or whether it will run only on Microsoft operating systems?
As an alternative, will all the relevant documentation be open so that
it will be possible to develop such app independently?
More in general, does the Commission understand the risks of an
excessive dependence on US software developers and Asian hardware
producers? Is the Commission trying to make the EU less dependent, for
example, by encouraging the use of Linux instead of Microsoft wherever
possible? Thank you!

Gianguido thanks. Just one Question I will add.
"will the Sourcecode of Wallet be made open available on a EU repository?"

Diego,

at this point nothing can be added because the message had already been
sent. I posted the mail for general information. From the answer we'll
understand how the EU behaves in this matter.

Of course, if the EU institutions react it is possible to enter a
dialogue with them.

Personally, I really doubt that the EU will ever set up a repository.
It's easier to engage a private subcontractor and cover them with gold
to do the same thing. (Chris will not like this comment, but it's
fairly realistic.)

An EU public repo is something that the FOSS EU community may ask,
differently from USA where all that repos are private actions, as in my
knowledge.

I am speaking from memory, and I don't have any references, but I think
that it will be available as an open source project.

Actually, the Commision is not building a Wallet and asking the member
states to use it. Instead, it is passing legislation that requires the
member states to have a Digital Identity Wallet for their citizens. However
they are publishing the technical specifications for such a wallet, so that
all those wallets are interoperable with each-other. They are also building
and publishing a working prototype of the wallet, as open source, so that
it can be reused by the member states, if they want to.

So, open source code is fundamental to this project, I think.
