Ciao Roberto.
Ho installato gajim v.1.8.0 da flatpack modalità --user. Al lancio ho
alcuni warning:

~$ flatpak run org.gajim.Gajim

(gajim:2): Gtk-WARNING **: 16:36:11.546: Locale not supported by C library.
Using the fallback 'C' locale.
Gtk-Message: 16:36:11.547: Failed to load module "xapp-gtk3-module"
unsupported locale setting
No translations found for en_US
No plugin translation path available

# condizioni:
~$ uname -a
Linux maxi-dt 5.15.0-76-generic #83-Ubuntu SMP Thu Jun 15 19:16:32 UTC 2023
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
# distro è Mint 21.1 cynnamon

L'applicazione comunque parte e pare funzionare, ma il comportamento non
appare "pulito".
Che ne dici?

Hallo,

warum wird nicht matrix.org benutzt? Ein Vorteil sehe ich in der größeren

Anzahl an Clients für verschiedene BS:

Ich benutze z.B. Elements!

One reason is that installing your own Matrix server is more difficult than
installing your own Snikket/XMPP server.
For example, one way of installing Matrix (and the most easy in my opinion)
is this one: GitHub - spantaleev/matrix-docker-ansible-deploy: 🐳 Matrix (An open network for secure, decentralized communication) server setup using Ansible and Docker
Compared to installing a Snikket server this is much more complex (in my
opinion).

Another reason is that the Matrix protocol uses much more meta data than
the XMPP protocol (I am not an expert on this, but I am reporting what I
hear from other people). Meta data are not encrypted, they are stored on
the server, and they are replicated across the federated servers. This
might be a problem of privacy/security, but it also increases the
bandwidth, storage and in general, the resources that are needed.

So, Matrix may have more features than XMPP, but XMPP is leaner and more
efficient.

But I am not against giving it a try too, if there are people willing to do
it.

Hi Konrad,

dashamir has already answered...

adding a more operational aspect:

--- i see the nsikket-server as an experiment, not so much as a general
solution, but as an attempt to improve internal lugbz-communication, and
on "own" server
--- currently, with the new board group (8 people), there is an attempt
to use a closed snikket group (cell phone) as a loose supplement to the
group communication via mailinglist.

Essendo in fase sperimentale perché non provare anche il protocollo Matrix?
XMPP è Matrix sono in qualche modo interoperabili?

It seems that there is a bridge between them:

One of the differences between Matrix and XMPP is that a Matrix server
keeps a history of all the messages. If you reinstall the Matrix client and
connect again to the server, you will find that all the old messages are
there, because they are stored on the server.

An XMPP server, on the other hand, keeps the messages as long as they are
delivered to the client. It is the responsibility of the client to keep the
history of the old messages.

Because of this, a Matrix--XMPP bridge may not be optimal in all cases.
