Workshop proposal: Introduction to GSoC

I believe most of you know about GSoC:

It is a mentorship program for university students, sponsored by Google. This year 195 open source organizations are participating.

The idea of this workshop is to make university students aware of this program, and give them some orientation about what to do, how to apply, etc. A few years ago I have been a mentor for Debian, so I have some idea about it and may share some insights, answer any questions, etc. I don’t know if other people have some experience with it.

The questions are:

  • Do you think this is a program that should be promoted, given that it is sponsored by Google, and Google is not everyone’s favorite? I (obviously) think it is worth, because it helps to attract young students to open source projects.

  • Are there any universities where we can advertise this workshop? Are there any chances that any students will participate? Because in the end, this workshop might be useful only to university students.

By the way, if we advertise one of LugBz events at a university, we indirectly advertise LugBz itself. Participants in our events are potential future members.

What do you think?

If members agree about this proposal, I may easily contact the Faculty of Engineering at UniBz. I used to work there when it was called Faculty of CS
Maybe some LugBz members are still students, or employees, over there???

Previously I worked at University of Genova, but I left in 2006. Many professors have retired since, others are still there and should remember me. Would that contact be meaningful (i.e. contacting students who live 450Km far away?)

Let me know if these are useful contacts and I will pursue them

Ciao

( Who happens to read here, but without access to the members-area, is heartily invited to use this link: https://lugbz.org/become-a-member/ for community-building )

Very good proposal Dashamir! As usual just propose a few possible dates, a title, short abstract and duration and I publish the workshop so that everyone can send out the link in invitations.

Best,
Paolo.

Thank you Paolo.

I have created this event: Workshop: Introduction to GSoC
People can share this link: https://talk.lugbz.org/t/workshop-introduction-to-gsoc/8468

The application period has started a week ago, so there is no time to loose. It is a very short notification, but let’s try and let’s hope that any interested students will show up.

By the way, a small banner might have been nice, but I am not good at making banners.

Correction: The application period starts on March 18. So I have corrected the workshop date as well: March 9, 20:00.

UniBZ is ok for me.
What about UniTN? I’ve friends teaching Math there. And also LinuxTrent members may be reached (via mailinglist…)

@diego.maniacco
It is a bit late for the workshop. However we are still in time to spread the word about GSoC. Applications start after a week.

My fault Dashamir, sorry :frowning:
Too many things going on in this period.

Paolo.

I don’t think anyone is to be blamed for anything.
